However, in the last two days, there is a chance of unpredictable weather with storms and heavy rains, or calm winds.

The route follows the Gulf Stream for the entire trip.  The water is often teeming with flying fish, dolphins, tunas and mahi-mahi that take shelter around the hulls of the little cat, making it an excellent spot for fishing.

Ten days of constant speed

This record was set on the Dakar-Guadalupe route, a full-fledged Atlantic crossing: 2,545 nautical miles with long waves and tropical storms from start to finish.

From a meteorological point of view, navigation is separated into three different stages:

• departure from Africa to the other side of the Cape Verde Islands

• navigating the trade winds

• landing in the Caribbean islands

In the first stage, navigation is mainly with cross winds and rather high wind.

From Cape Verde on, the role played by the routier is key because you must never lose the trade winds, which has become very hard in recent years because of unpredictable climate.

Sometimes, low-pressure systems normally positioned much higher move through the area forming counter winds and days when the sea is dead calm.
